The website for this year’s Sound Festival is now live here. Running from 21 October-13 November across North-East Scotland, we’d like to draw your attention to a three-day event from the excellent Interesting Music Promotions at Peacock Visual Arts on the last weekend of October. Poster below. Very cool indeed.

When you’re mentally compiling your ‘gigs of the year’ lists in a few weeks time (you all do that right? Just us then? OK, erm..) we’ll not be surprised in the slightest if this one features pretty highly…

Since its inception in 1995, Chemikal Underground Records has consistently been one of the best independent labels, not just in Scotland, but anywhere. Started by The Delgados and responsible for bringing the likes of Mogwai, Interpol, Bis, Arab Strap, De Rosa and Aereogramme to our attention, this showcase (part of the Sound Festival) featuring some the label’s current roster looks nothing short of f***king fantastic…

Seriously, check this out for a line up:

Superb, critically-lauded, Krautrock-tinged Glasgow six-piece The Phantom Band, label co-founder, ex-Delgado and wonderful singer-songwriter Emma Pollock, the frequently hilarious, deadpan introspection of former Arab Strapper Aidan Moffat (pictured below) and frontman-turned-solo-artist from the (already) sadly-missed De Rosa, Martin John Henry.

This would be all over The Guardian Guide etc. like a rash if it was happening down South, luckily for us, it’s right on our doorstep. Recommended.

Music: Le Weekend

There’s no reason for the ‘le’ whatsoever, just being slightly affected. Anyway, without further ado, here are les picks for this weekend…

Two of Scotland’s most popular acts are in town; Idlewild (The Warehouse, Fri) and The Proclaimers (AEEC, Sat). Both sold out though, so enjoy if you’ve got tickets. Friday also sees a couple of Sound Festival shows outside the city; King Creosote and The Pictish Trail at The Woodend Barn, Banchory (8pm, £14, really nice venue) and most interestingly, experimental music with Mark Wastell and Will Guthrie at The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, Fraserburgh (7.30pm, £7/£5, Free bus from Aberdeen Art Gallery at 6pm). How cool does that sound? I mean, it’s in a lighthouse museum…

Ace local group Super Six Funk Machine are promoting two shows over the weekend; Newcastle hip-hop/funk band The 27 Club at Drummonds on Friday (9pm/£4, with the Funk Machine themselves in support) and superb US hip-hop outfit Ugly Duckling on Saturday (The Tunnels, 10.30pm, £5) while further beat-driven goodness can be had at Origin when Everything Else Sucks welcome Manchester house, breaks ‘n’ bass duo Heavy Feet (Saturday, 10pm, £6). That lot should keep you going, however, as always, see our listings if nothing here takes your fancy. Hiv a good een folks…

Tonight! German composer/percussionist Burkhard Beins (wikipedia bio) and Aberdeen-based experimental electronica bod Bill Thompson play a selection of weird and wonderful instruments in the unusual but promising surroundings of The Suttie Centre in Foresterhill. Part of the Sound Festival, this looks like it could be a very interesting evening indeed…

One of the most interesting music festivals in the country kicks off tonight right on your doorstep (assuming you’re reading this in the Aberdeen area, obviously).

Until the 22nd of November, a frighteningly impressive programme of concerts, talks and workshops encompassing everything from experimental, contemporary and good old-fashioned indie guitar music through dance and children’s shows to symphony orchestras and film takes place across the North-East. Stay tuned to The Kiosque for our picks throughout the festival’s run.

Tonight’s opening concert looks like it will set down a pretty good marker: The contemporary Pianocircus ensemble have been wowing audiences since 1989 with six keyboards, sixty fingers, split-second timing and a stunning repertoire, add in the iconic Beach Ballroom factor and you’re looking at something pretty special indeed…
