The Filthy Dukes bring their famed Kill Em All night North from its home at London’s Fabric for the first of a new bi-monthly residency at The Dirty Hearts Club.   They’ll be joined by KEA co-promoter and one of the DJs/producers du jour Stopmakingme whose eclectic mix of electro, techno, house, post-punk, pop and anything in between pretty much sums up the ethos of the night.  Which sounds fine by us.  Check out some mixes here, they sound fine by us too…

So, why are we featuring this?  Well, the EP was partly recorded in Aberdeen (as well as a Portacabin in Stonehaven, the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh and the streets of Prague we’re reliably informed) and features members of Copy Haho, PVH and local cellist Rachel Lind.  We’re promised some live dates in the summer too.  Should be quite something…

I’d imagine quite a few of you reading this have been to the Dirty Hearts Club down Snafu way at some point;  it’s a beacon of good taste on a Thursday night, I mean check out some of the bands and DJs who’ve played there on their myspace. Pretty impressive.

Anyway, they’re celebrating their fourth birthday in style with two cracking nights which encapsulate the club’s eclectic nature perfectly…

First up, on Thursday 28 January, London duo Filthy Dukes grace the decks. With a well-received debut album landing last year, they’re also known for their monthly genre-hopping ‘Kill ‘Em All’ night at Fabric, a quick look at the tracklisting from their FabricLive mix (in the company of some damn fine mix CDs over the years there) gives you a few pointers.  I’m going to stick my neck out here and say they might go down quite well..(10pm, £6/£5adv)

Then, on Sunday 31 January, there’s what promises to be a special DJ set from Salavatore Principato of legendary early-80s New York post-punk band Liquid Liquid.  His only Scottish date, you can expect similar dubby, funky, disco-y stuff to this online mix.  Ace.  It doesn’t stop there however; excellent synth-laden Glasgow popsters Findo Gask (pictured below, and superb at The Tunnels last year) play live, and a stellar line-up of local DJs including Funky Transport, KidBell and Martin Jay join the DHC regulars.  This is going to be quite a party. I like the name Cuddly Shark it has to be said.  Fluffy, but with a hint of danger. Bit like myself to be honest.  Anyway, this three-piece hail from Elgin, have relocated to Glasgow and towards the end of last year released a debut album chock-full of rockabilly/punk/country/indie-pop tunes topped off with hilariously sharp lyrics.  Stick them on your ‘ones to watch’  list.

With Glasgow indie-punks Miss The Occupier, Aberdeen alt.rockers Eric Euan and Moray powerpop outfit Farewell Singapore also on the bill this looks to be well worth it.  Even though I can’t actually find out how much it costs to get in. If anyone knows,  tell us below.

Bang!  It’s like waiting for a bus with regard to competitions on The Kiosque at the moment.  Two in quick succession.  Unless the bus you’re waiting for is a First Bus bus of course.  Then it might be worth just cutting your losses and walking…

We’re really lucky to have something like One Up Records still trading in our city you know,  especially since so many other iconic independent record shops have fallen by the wayside of late.  I’m sure many of you frequent the place on a regular basis, so I won’t need to tell you what it’s like (in the unlikely event that anyone reading this hasn’t visited, they’re on Belmont Street in Aberdeen by the way).

To celebrate an incredible 30 years of being an integral, nay essential, part of the city’s music scene, this rather tasty-looking takeover of The Tunnels is on the cards.  Anyone who’s ever spent their Saturday mornings combing the record racks of the place owes themselves to get down to this one.  So, who’s playing then?

Hashimoto Jones –  A Jazzy, poppy, funky, bluesy quartet fronted by ‘Holland’s Own’ Nina Eggens (sorry Nina!)

In addition, some fantastic DJs will be doing their thing including Finnie, Elizium, various One Up staff past & present and the Interesting Music Promotions crew (thanks to them again for the tickets!), there may well be some more names added to the bill too (we’ll keep you posted), alongside some surprises as well…

What a way to end the year.  This may well trump what you’ve got planned for Hogmanay…

Live music from Beats of Rage a ‘chiptune-fuelled digital hardcore attack using Gameboys, a Commodore 64, fuzz guitar and screaming’ and Gameboy musician Comptroller, who promises the thickest sounds you’ve ever heard from a loveable, small, grey plastic brick as well as turntable action from DJs Alun Elizium and Still Gay.

All local acts too. This sort of thing deserves to be supported. Go get your mind melted.

This looks nuts.  London-based Japanese band Bo Ningen have been making waves around The Smoke of late, gaining a reputation for their incendiary live shows. Musically, think The Stooges, Sabbath, Minutemen & Psychedelia.  Visually, think hair, jumping, climbing, more hair and general unpredictability.  Go see this and we reckon you might be talking about it for a while…

Support comes in the shape of local guitar soundscapist Amber Pilot and an electronica set from artist/musician Sarah J Tingle.

It’s not even the weekend yet and here’s the third show featuring some superb Scottish acts we’ve featured in the space of four days…

This time it’s the turn of glorious, shouty, bouncy, ‘fight-pop’ (their phrase) Glasgow outfit Dananananaykroyd.  Now pretty firmly established on these shores and beyond, the word ‘energetic’ doesn’t do them justice.  Let’s just say they know how to put on a show.

In an inspired piece of booking, support comes from local hip-hop type Kuda and post-punks Carson Wells while the Teenage Lust/Copy Haho DJs provide some recorded musical interludes.  We thought the scary poster was worth including too, so without further ado…

Ooh, scary ghosties etc.  Here’s the pick of the Halloween musical happenings round town on Saturday…

The Lemon Tree hosts the annual Skalloween bash with a headline set from superb dub/reggae collective and The Specials’ tour support Pama International. Local bands Famous Ape and AKA Ska complete the line-up (8pm/£12)

The Tunnels has a perfect fit for the evening in the shape of weird, dark and  jazzy ex-Uncle John & Whitelock types Tut Vu Vu (8pm/£5) while down at The Moorings (where let’s face it, it’s Halloween every day of the week)  Dundee horror-punks Dirty Wee Middens are among the bands playing at Fudge Promotions‘ ‘Halloween Spectacular’ (8pm/£3)

Club-wise, Ed Banger Records’ French disco/hip-hop/electro producer DJ Mehdi (pictured below) guests at Let It Bleed‘s party at The Forum (10pm/£12), Room 2 at The Warehouse hosts Peepshow Creepshow: A Halloween Burlesque Ball (11pm/£10) featuring loads of performances and DJ Jimsin while excellent Glasgow house/techno duo Silicone Soul (Soma Records) play at Snafu (11pm/£8).

Right, I’m off to cut two eyeholes in a bedsheet.  Again.  Hey, it’s a classic OK?
