The Aberdeen public will get the opportunity to be the first to see new work by American artist and ceramist Ehren Tool.  A former Sergeant in the US Marine Corp and Gulf war Veteran, he left the service and began his studies at The University of California, Berkley, graduating in 2005 with a Masters Degree in Fine Art. Having exhibited extensively across America, Germany and France and with work on permanent display at the Pentagon, Ehren, based in California, has teamed up with Scottish arts collaborative Stray Dog to bring his first UK exhibition to Aberdeen.  ”Humble Occupation” will run from 20th to 26th February and will feature an installation of his signature ceramic cups finished with images, carvings and text that present ongoing realities of war and conflict shared by many.

Over one hundred cups have been made and shipped over from California.  Jim Ewen of Stray Dog says “It’s a privilege to present new work by Ehren, even more so as it was made especially for this exhibition in Aberdeen.  Ehren is an artist recognised at an international level and it is our hope that the public will visit the gallery to view his thought-provoking work that resonates as much now as when he first started.”

A quick heads-up about this:

“Temporary Art School is a one month live project happening throughout the city of Aberdeen in March 2012.  A group of people living and working in both Aberdeen and Glasgow have come together to put on classes and workshops which experiment with what an art school can be, and continue a long tradition of self-organised education.  The school is free and no previous experience of art education or training is required.”

You can sign up for some of the classes which have limited spaces now, although there will be open-to-all drop-in sessions every Friday during March.

The project will also be documented and shown at The Pipe Factory as part of  the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art in April/May.

It’s a new exhibition at Project Slogan, you can see who’s involved on the rather natty poster featuring a surprised/scary cat/panther below. The eagle-eyed among you may also notice the name of anCnoc whisky on there too, which means there just might be the chance to have a wee sample of their wares at the opening on Friday while you check out the show. Or zhow. Or zomething…

Advice: Get down early for this one, Project Slogan is tiny, and there are no advance tickets, so don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Fife songwriter Panda Su‘s blend of folk, pop and electronica has been turning heads of late, and big things are predicted for her in 2011 (check out a sneak peek of her new EP here). With support from excellent Dundonian multi-instrumentalist Esperi and local duo Sarah J Stanley & Fiona Keenan, we predict this is going to be a pretty special, small, but perfectly-formed evening’s entertainment…

Excellent wee gallery Project Slogan know that the only way to raise money for their 2011 programme is through the medium of paperchain. With this in mind, they’ll be making a huge one on Saturday with their fingers. A paperchain that is, you perverts.

On a serious note, funding cuts mean they need your help, so sponsor their endeavours here (just click the amount you want to give at the bottom) and ensure they keep doing interesting stuff next year. As the paperchaining comes to a fevered climax, there’ll also be DJs and visuals from 8pm, as the gallery’s Christmas party gets underway (BYOB, all welcome).

Two reasons to visit the ace wee Project Slogan Gallery;  first up is their third birthday party on Saturday 3rd July at 8pm with music, visuals, cake, dancing and all that jazz.  The party also launches their new opening hours which kick in on Tuesday 6 July alongside an equally new ‘pay what you want’ cafe. Coffee!  Food!  Free Wi-Fi!  Zines to read!  Why am I using all these exclamation marks!  I’ve no idea!  It makes me look mental!  More details on the cafe here.  So, aye and, erm “!”

Despite all this online bluster we’re still print fetishists at heart, so this looks absolutely perfect:  A selection of self-published books and zines covering writing, illustration, comics, drawing and more to look through.  Excellent.  There’ll be some for sale too, so take some cash…

Looks really weird the word ‘selflessness’ doesn’t it?  Too many ‘S’s for my liking. Something should be done.  Anyway, this looks pretty interesting; two artists and what has been described as a ‘massive mirror and tent-like thing’.  Preview on Friday at Project Slogan…

Artist Ally Wallace unveils a new installation under the banner ‘Interchange’ (that’s the promo image below) at Project Slogan’s main gallery in Torry on Friday.  All welcome.  Free refreshments.  Handy for some ‘character-driven’ pubs afterwards.
