The T In The Park effect means fewer gigs than usual this weekend. If you’re in the city however, you could do a lot worse than check out Autumn In Disguise at The Tunnels on Thursday, a load of bands playing across The Tunnels & Drummonds on Friday (as part of the Drummonds Two Grand Tournament, formerly the Northern Lights Showcases), and Turning 13 at The Moorings on Saturday. Friday 20 & 27 May | The Moorings | 9.30pm | £2

After an extended hiatus, Tupelo Town Assembly return to the Aberdeen gigging circuit proper this week with the first of two consecutive Friday shows at The Moorings. They’re steeped in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, surf, blues, beat and garage this lot, and will have some new material in tow too (check out the tune below).

To quote: “The main objective of TTA is to deliver a hard-hitting, riff-laden aural assault that both recognises and respects the rich history of the riff, served up with a side order of killer bass hooks and driving beats.”

Sounds good to me…

Music: Saturday Will Be Good

An aligning of the planets on Saturday night means there’s a truckload of stuff on, all of which is worth some lug-time:

The loooong-awaited return to the city by Mogwai (supported by Remember Remember) at The Music Hall has gig of the year potential, despite the fact that February’s not even upon us yet (there are still some balcony tickets available here at time of writing). They’re jockeying discs at Snafu afterwards too, alongside excellent Weegie underground house duo Silicone Soul.

Angular Californian disco-punks (yes I did just write that, shoot me now) Funeral Party play The Tunnels, Cafe Drummonds has a couple of mod-influenced bands followed by superb soul/ska/reggae selector Alan Paterson, the Son Henry Band get their dirty blues on in the apt surroundings of The Moorings, and in perhaps the biggest coup of all, there’s a DJ set from dubstep producer/songwriter du jour James Blake at Origin (this guy will be all over your Saturday supplements in the next few months, trust me).

Some people will still moan that nothing happens in this town of course. F**k ‘em.

With the usual post-festivities lull in full swing as we slip (quite literally, I’ve been like a newly-born foal out there) into the New Year, one venue is admirably kicking off 2010 like they mean to go on. It’s called The Moorings Bar. ’I'm nae drinking though’ you say. We’ll see…

This is a decent line-up for sure; powerful, melodic North-East alt. rockers Eric Euan (pictured below), heavier sounds courtesy of Livingston’s Jackie Treehorn and Aberdeen’s Liars Dice, with interesting-sounding noisy Edinburgh instrumental types Vasquez getting things underway. Perfect cobweb-blasting stuff.

Ooh, scary ghosties etc. Here’s the pick of the Halloween musical happenings round town on Saturday…

The Lemon Tree hosts the annual Skalloween bash with a headline set from superb dub/reggae collective and The Specials’ tour support Pama International. Local bands Famous Ape and AKA Ska complete the line-up (8pm/£12)

The Tunnels has a perfect fit for the evening in the shape of weird, dark and jazzy ex-Uncle John & Whitelock types Tut Vu Vu (8pm/£5) while down at The Moorings (where let’s face it, it’s Halloween every day of the week) Dundee horror-punks Dirty Wee Middens are among the bands playing at Fudge Promotions‘ ‘Halloween Spectacular’ (8pm/£3)

Club-wise, Ed Banger Records’ French disco/hip-hop/electro producer DJ Mehdi (pictured below) guests at Let It Bleed‘s party at The Forum (10pm/£12), Room 2 at The Warehouse hosts Peepshow Creepshow: A Halloween Burlesque Ball (11pm/£10) featuring loads of performances and DJ Jimsin while excellent Glasgow house/techno duo Silicone Soul (Soma Records) play at Snafu (11pm/£8).

Right, I’m off to cut two eyeholes in a bedsheet. Again. Hey, it’s a classic OK?

Saturday Night: Skiffle, Rawk and Eclecticism

Yeah, you’re moaning about the rain now but by 7pm or so you’ll be looking for something to do, so here are a couple of picks for tonight:

It doesn’t get more old-school than skiffle, and The Lonnie Donegan Band sees the legend’s son take to the mic with his dad’s original backing band. A wee bit of UK musical history. (Lemon Tree, 7.30pm)

The Saturday gigs at The Moorings are always good for a bit of debauchery, and this week Samurai Fury and Falling Red play as part of an unashamed Rock (capital ‘R’ fully intended) night. Which is exactly what the venue was made for. (8pm)

Lastly, DJs Twitch and Wilkes take their famed Glasgow clubnight Optimo north for a potentially messy, guaranteed loud (there’s a huge soundsystem being installed as we speak) night at The Forum (11pm). Expect genre-hopping a-plenty; it’s pointless trying to predict what those two will have in their record boxes…
