Friday 26 February | The Lemon Tree | 8pm | £8.50 Tickets

Glasgow instrumentalists Errors’ soon-to-be released second album ‘Come Down With Me’  sounds like that Channel 4 show you pretend you don’t watch if said in a clipped, 70s sitcom upper-class English accent:  Come Dine with me.  Let’s go Dine to my Hice. Hmmm. Kind of works.  I’ll leave it in anyway.  I’ll read it back later and wonder what the hell I was on about though.  Guaranteed.

Anyway, Errors are signed to Mogwai’s Rock Action label and their new stuff is a pretty glorious mix of synths, guitars and driving drums which draws on krautrock, house, funk and post-rock with some big, swirling sounsdcapery thrown in for good measure.  Check out their ace, bouncy, new single (out today, Mon 22nd) below.  F**k knows what’s going on in the video though…

Support comes from tight, melodic and energetic local indie types Marionettes and the mysterious Min Diesel.

Friday 20 November | The Lemon Tree | 7.30pm | £15

When you’re mentally compiling your ‘gigs of the year’ lists in a few weeks time (you all do that right? Just us then? OK, erm..) we’ll not be surprised in the slightest if this one features pretty highly…

Since its inception in 1995, Chemikal Underground Records has consistently been one of the best independent labels, not just in Scotland, but anywhere.  Started by The Delgados and responsible for bringing the likes of Mogwai, Interpol, Bis, Arab Strap, De Rosa and Aereogramme to our attention, this showcase (part of the Sound Festival) featuring some the label’s current roster looks nothing short of f***king fantastic…

Seriously, check this out for a line up:

Superb, critically-lauded, Krautrock-tinged Glasgow six-piece The Phantom Band, label co-founder, ex-Delgado and wonderful singer-songwriter Emma Pollock, the frequently hilarious, deadpan introspection of former Arab Strapper Aidan Moffat (pictured below) and frontman-turned-solo-artist from the (already) sadly-missed De Rosa, Martin John Henry.

This would be all over The Guardian Guide etc. like a rash if it was happening down South, luckily for us, it’s right on our doorstep.  Recommended.

Music: Allen Toussaint

November 16, 2009

This show has been cancelled. See homepage/post above for details

Producer, songwriter, solo artist…Allen Toussaint’s 40-year career has seen him work with some of the best in the business, as well as almost single-handedly crafting the New Orleans R&B/Funk sound of the Sixties and Seventies.  Session painist for Fats Domino, writer of Lee Dorsey’s ‘Get Out Of My Life Woman’ (see below) and ‘Working In A Coalmine‘, producer of legendary band The Meters and LaBelle’s ‘Lady Marmalade‘…the list goes on.  This is going to be amazing.

Comedy: Jim Jefferies

November 3, 2009

Wednesday 4 November | The Lemon Tree | 7.30pm | £14

Big night for comedy in town what with Eddie Izzard playing the AECC too (there are still a few tickets available I believe), however if you’re interested in a more intimate atmosphere then this is the one to go for.  Aussie comedian Jim Jefferies recently had his own special on HBO, and has a reputation for being a wee bit controversial (see clip below). What’s doubly amusing/ironic round these parts of course is that he shares a name with the manager of Kilmarnock FC (and a man who never smiles, ever)…

Music: Halloween Round-Up

October 30, 2009

Saturday 31 October (obviously)

Ooh, scary ghosties etc.  Here’s the pick of the Halloween musical happenings round town on Saturday…

The Lemon Tree hosts the annual Skalloween bash with a headline set from superb dub/reggae collective and The Specials’ tour support Pama International. Local bands Famous Ape and AKA Ska complete the line-up (8pm/£12)

The Tunnels has a perfect fit for the evening in the shape of weird, dark and  jazzy ex-Uncle John & Whitelock types Tut Vu Vu (8pm/£5) while down at The Moorings (where let’s face it, it’s Halloween every day of the week)  Dundee horror-punks Dirty Wee Middens are among the bands playing at Fudge Promotions‘ ‘Halloween Spectacular’ (8pm/£3)

Club-wise, Ed Banger Records’ French disco/hip-hop/electro producer DJ Mehdi (pictured below) guests at Let It Bleed’s party at The Forum (10pm/£12), Room 2 at The Warehouse hosts Peepshow Creepshow: A Halloween Burlesque Ball (11pm/£10) featuring loads of performances and DJ Jimsin while excellent Glasgow house/techno duo Silicone Soul (Soma Records) play at Snafu (11pm/£8).

Right, I’m off to cut two eyeholes in a bedsheet.  Again.  Hey, it’s a classic OK?

Music: Edwyn Collins, 1990s

October 17, 2009

Sunday 18 October | The Lemon Tree | 7.30pm | £15

There’s little more to add to Edwyn Collins’ story other than that we fully expect him to be as funny and engaging  as he was at his wife’s book launch in Waterstone’s earlier this year.   This is a man who not only recovered from two brain haemorrhages, but continues to write some pretty amazing songs as well. Just like he’s always done.   Support comes from noisy Glasgow trio 1990s. Inspirational stuff.

Arts: DanceLive!

October 14, 2009

Until Monday 2 Nov | Various Venues

The 4th DanceLive! Festival is underway with nine companies (including Scottish Ballet) presenting the very best in contemporary dance.  A huge range of performances, workshops and classes are taking place at various venues in Aberdeen (and the Woodend Barn in Banchory) with full listings and booking information available on the DanceLive website

Yeah, you’re moaning about the rain now but by 7pm or so you’ll be looking for something to do, so here are a couple of picks for tonight:

It doesn’t get more old-school than skiffle, and The Lonnie Donegan Band sees the legend’s son take to the mic with his dad’s original backing band.  A wee bit of UK musical history. (Lemon Tree, 7.30pm)

The Saturday gigs at The Moorings are always good for a bit of debauchery, and this week Samurai Fury and Falling Red play as part of an unashamed Rock (capital ‘R’  fully intended) night.  Which is exactly what the venue was made for. (8pm)

Lastly, DJs Twitch and Wilkes take their famed Glasgow clubnight Optimo north for a potentially messy, guaranteed loud (there’s a huge soundsystem being installed as we speak) night at The Forum (11pm).  Expect genre-hopping a-plenty;  it’s pointless trying to predict what those two will have in their record boxes…

Full line-ups, prices (and plenty other stuff on round town tonight if none of the above take your fancy) are, as always, in our listings
