Film/Competition: Precious

To celebrate the release of PRECIOUS on Friday 5 February at The Belmont Picturehouse, we’ve got three copies of the book on which the film was based to give away. Read on for details…
Adapted from the bestselling novel Push by Sapphire, PRECIOUS tells the inspirational story of a girl whose struggle embodies America’s downtrodden youth. Pregnant by her father with her second child and taunted over her obesity and illiteracy by her peers, Clareece ‘Precious’ Jones’s life is one of unimaginable trauma and heartache…
Growing up in New York’s unforgiving Harlem district, Precious is plagued by her drug-addicted father and deranged mother, who are not so much unwilling parents as outright unfit. Her home is the epitome of broken, but when she’s invited to an alternative school by a social worker (Carey), she discovers hope in the support around her. Encouraged not tormented, she becomes determined to turn her life around.
With Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry onboard as executive producers and Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz supporting, PRECIOUS seems destined for big-screen success, bold direction and a brave central performance from newcomer Gabourey Sidibe have been stirring expectation since the film premiered at Sundance 2009. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, but anyone who writes off PRECIOUS does so at their own peril. This is set to be one of the year’s big cinematic surprises and a serious awards contender.
To win a copy of Push, simply answer the following question and send your answer by email to belmont@picturehouses.co.uk marked ‘Precious competition’ before midnight on Sunday 7th February

Thanks to a hook-up with the excellent Belmont Picturehouse, we’ll now be bringing you movie previews each week courtesy of cinema manager and film geek extraordinaire Dallas King. They’re also giving you the chance to win a pair of tickets every week too, which is incredibly generous…so, over to you Mr King:
‘Gorgeous’ George Clooney takes to the skies in the Oscar-tipped UP IN THE AIR. A corporate downsizer and frequent flyer risks having his life grounded when his company changes business strategy and he meets a kindred spirit in the form of sexy businesswoman Alex. (More previews & the competition after the video)
Also screening this week are:
John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel THE ROAD (trailer), which follows an unnamed Man & Boy as they trek along a long and winding road following the destruction of civilisation.
Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin prove there is still life after 50 in the new comedy IT’S COMPLICATED (trailer) by writer/director Nancy Meyers.
For something a little bit different why not come along to a live opera screening? The Met Opera in New York is transmitting a live performance of CARMEN via satellite on Sat 16 January at 6pm. Tickets cost £25. It might seem a lot, but it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than flying to NYC!
Also, keep your ears open for the new Belmont podcast which will feature here on The Kiosque. We’re recording the first one this week so hopefully it should be online soon. Watch your back Mayo and Kermode!
…and finally, the freebies, each week we’ll be running a competition to win two tickets to see your choice of our new releases. All you need to do is answer the question below:
George Clooney starred as Batman in which film?
a) Batman Forever b) Batman & Robin c) Batman Begins
…and send your answer to belmont@picturehouses.co.uk marked ‘Kiosque Competition’ before midnight on Sunday 17 January.

Music/Competition: Fruit Bats
December 11, 2009
Tuesday 15 December | The Tunnels | 8pm | £8 adv (From One Up or Ticketweb)/£10 door
We’ve got a couple of tickets to give away for this one courtesy of Interesting Music Promotions, see below, but first, the blurb…
So, Fruit Bats feature Eric D. Johnson and Ron Lewis from The Shins amongst others and they’re signed to Sub Pop. There’s some credentials for you…
Chicago native Johnson started this particular side-project in the mid 90s, putting out a couple of well-received albums a few years later. Now they’re back with latest release ‘The Ruminant Band.’ We’ve heard it, and what a gorgeous slice of folk-tinged psychedelic pop it is. Really good. Like, really, really good. Add in support acts like Isle of Wight acoustic folkster Puzzle Muteson plus a promising collaboration between The Little Kicks’ Steven Milne and Mike Chang from Indian Red Lopez (which may well be worth the entrance fee alone) and you’re looking at something quite special indeed…
To win a pair of tickets to the show, simply answer this question
What was the name of the last album by The Shins?
…and email it marked ‘Fruit Bats Comp’ to thekiosque@googlemail.com before 5pm on Monday 14 December
The eventual winner will be picked at random. From our special Kiosque randomizer. Which is a technological marvel that looks like something oot of The Jetsons.
Good luck!
