Saturday 5 November | Beach Ballroom | 5pm | £15 (Tickets available from One Up Records)

I like the Beach Ballroom; the way it defiantly eyeballs Codonas and other seafront developments across the links and just about survives having an uninspiring leisure centre skittering out from its behind, it’s an iconic part of the city’s musical history that will hopefully be with us forever.

Let’s also hope that this show sees many punters hitting the venue’s famous sprung dancefloor; organised by local musician Jamie Rodden to raise funds for Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s Coronary Care Unit after his father Jim spent some time there earlier this year, it features a great line-up of some of the city’s best-known bands. See poster below for confirmation of this then check out the event’s Facebook page. In summary: good cause, good venue, good music. Good.

The line-ups will be announced soon, but before all that there are music quizzes and showcases to come. We’ll let you know the details of these shortly, however if you’re hungry for updates you could do worse than keep an eye on their Facebook page and Twitter account. It goes without saying that it’s all in aid of a very good cause and you can already donate here if you feel inclined to do so. Which you should…

Sunday 2 May | Mambo’s, Peterhead | 1pm | Sold Out

Yeah, it’s a wee while away but this is shaping up to to be one of best reasons to go to Peterhead in history (apologies to any Blue Toon locals/lovers reading this) as local promoters Shmeet The Beat go all-out for their May Day special…

Featuring a DJ set from former Creation Records head honcho, hat fan & unapologetic antagonist Alan McGee, the line-up also includes some fine, fine bands from round these parts and beyond including Indian Red Lopez, the Fence Collective’s electronic wizard OnTheFly, Cast of the Capital, The Underkills, Steven Milne & many more, and it’s all in aid of Breast Cancer Care too. Time to head North then, and it’s not often we get to say that…

Full line-up after this pic of McGee (in full flow by the looks of it), and it’s pretty damn good…

Pop Boutique: Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 March | 22 Schoolhill | 10am-5pm| Free

Do It!: Saturday 13 March | The Tunnels | 9pm | £3

A couple of events this weekend in aid of social care charity VSA:

First up, in the old Harley Clothing store at 22 Schoolhill, Pop Boutique (Facebook event page) gives you the chance to buy exclusive pieces from young Scottish artists, designers and creative bods…

Then it’s off down The Tunnels from 9pm on the Saturday for an afterparty courtesy of the Do It! crew. A move from their regular haunt of Cellar 35 means they can kick up things a notch, so expect all the things they’re good at (great visuals, eclectic selectors, funk, house, 80s tunes, dancing, artwork, that kind of stuff) to be somewhat multiplied and amplified, which, to state the screamingly obvious, is a good thing. Soundtracked by Do It! resident White Chocolate alongside guest Kid Bell, the night also sees the launch of the Aberdeen Sketch Book project (look! another Facebook event page). Aye, this lot know how to fuse art and music together alright. More power to them…

A whole day of live music spread across the city and all for a very good cause indeed, sounds a bit too good to be true?

Starting off in The Belmont Picturehouse at 2pm, taking in a BBQ in Enigma’s courtyard at 5 (rather optimistic, but hey, it’s for charity, are you reading sun gods?) and lasting well into the night at some of the city’s best venues, Aberdeen’s version of Oxjam looks very good indeed.

As a wee bit of background to what it’s all about, over to Oxjam regional manager Scott Hamilton:

‘Oxjam’s focus this year is to raise awareness of Oxfam’s campaign against climate change – and its work to put pressure on world leaders to commit to ending global warming at the UN Summit in Copenhagen in December. Oxjam Aberdeen is giving you the chance to do your bit for charity without even noticing. You pay your cash – and we put on a night of incredible live music.’

Indeed. Anyway, there are far too many bands playing to list here (although highlights include hip-hop duo Shy & DRS, folk-popsters Headlight and the energetic Marionettes) so check out the poster below. You can keep up to date at the Oxjam Aberdeen Facebook Group too.

Tickets are available from One Up and We Got Tickets
